Nice, but well worn, dug condition very early 1820's Revenue marine/Revenue cutter service coat button. Flat, 1 piece gilded button with border and rope edging. The front as you can see is pretty worn, but as these are hard to find this one is in good condition for being dug. Made during the 1820's and 1830's, these buttons are the earliest worn by Revenue Marine Personnel. The front shows a shield with balanced scales bearing 13 stars on the chevron. A key is found below with a horizontal foul anchor above. The field is lined and oval. The Back is also pretty worn, but has the clear raised mark backmark in a depressed channel with two inner and one outer solid rings.. The shank on this one is missing. The revenue service collected import duties and eventually became the IRS. This button was recovered at Hariott's Bluff, St Mary's River, Florida
