The description says it all about this one, my favorite piece so far, beautiful ,and historic.

A Beautiful, Fully Struck, Maris 54-k Serpent Head. Ex Craig, Picker, Boyd

1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 54-k, Rarity-3. Serpent Head. AU-50. 125.4 grains. A beautiful example of one of the most popular of New Jersey Coppers. Frosty golden brown, with mahogany patina. More fully struck than most of this variety. The surfaces are nice with a raised scale around the central obverse, which is likely a relic of an impure planchet. Some light hairlines in obverse filed and a small planchet flaw at EA of Caesarea. In Stack Bowers 2013 Americana Sale, it was stated, "Mr. Craige called this "Condition Census, CHOICE! X-Boyd," suggesting this was acquired from John Ford. The Ford sale includes a Serpent Head graded Uncirculated (in the SHI Condition Census as AU+, ranked second) and the AU Bushnell coin, which is not in the six-coin SHI census. This piece, with its AU sharpness and minor surface imperfections, probably ranks within the top ten known. Die State 2, with a light crack from A of NOVA to C of CAESAREA.”

Provenance: Stacks Bowers 2013 Americana Sale from Ted L. Craige Collection, lot #11377. Earlier ex:F.C.C. Boyd. Paper envelope with attribution and pedigree notes included
