Here is a extremely nice excavated button. One piece pewter, 14th regiment coat button from 1798- 1802 period. This buttons condition is rarely encountered, no flaking, slight edge loss and very clear, crisp, defined front. Has the "UNITED STATES", encircling the regimental number, with border. The back also is in very good condition and has its loop shank intact. The 14th regiment button is a hard and scarce one to find in any condition. Hard to find any better. In 1798, there were only four existing regiments of infantry. With war looming with France it was expanded, by 12 more regiments, to 16 total regiments. Thousands were made, but the button was short lived as a new style with eagle was about to come out.

Backmark: ""Blank Back"(19mm)

Ref: Albert-GI28 R14

Prior collection Donald G. Partrick
This is 1 of the 27 regimental buttons I purchased from the Donald G. Partrick collection, recently sold off at Heritage Auctions. They are also some of the earliest, I believe dug buttons, as there condition shows, most of which were probably dug up in the northern states area, by very early collectors, before the big cities were built.
